Portola Cafe Deli

I wish there was a rating between Average and Very Good. The Parkside Grille is definitely above Average, but I am not sure it quite ranks as Very Good. The food is good. I chose the restaurant for Stanford graduation weekend to get away from the crowds and to avoid what are often over-priced mediocre restaurants in downtown Palo Alto. As a strategy this worked very well. You are worlds away in a bucolic setting. We had requested the outdoor terrace -- which truly is among the redwoods and this makes for a really lovely setting. I had expected the terrace to be behind the restaurant, this is not the case. It in the front of the restaurant, adjacent to the parking area and within hearing of the road that goes by the restaurant. It isn&#39;t a busy road, but you do hear cars. The food is good, the atmosphere is kind of rustic/elegant. The terrace was very dark and when we asked for candles or something to add some light the waitress seemed surprised. She did bring one tiny little candle that didn&#39;t do much for a table of seven. I couldn&#39;t see my food at all, although it tasted good. We also had to ask to have the heat lamps turned on -- &quot;I&#39;ll check&quot; -- but they did turn on not only ours, but several others across the patio and this was helpful as the night got chilly. I am just not sure why they wouldn&#39;t handle lighting and heating without a special plea. I had a lovely salad and the chili relleno which was good. Being able to see it would have added something however. Everyone enjoyed their meals, but no one was raving about the food. So I think its a good place to try, it is a lovely spot, the prices are reasonable and the menu has a good amount of variety. Bring a sweater and a flashlight.
